“ As an author he is very honest and there is no pretence about what he has done, he did commit awful acts”
Jean Houghton
“ It is amazing that anyone who was part of such evil, can be truly redeemed. It is a lesson to all of us about second chances and hope.” Patsy Moorhead
“ In the book club we read a whole range of material- modern and classical, fact and fiction. This book has definitely had a deep impact on all the group.” Kira Jones
“ I felt compelled to read Ishmael’s story following my visit to West Africa. I have seen at first hand the damage and destruction that the war caused. The people there have suffered so much, yet they remain people of great hope.”
Yvonne Daley
“This is a universal story about family and no matter what happens with a good family beside you anything is possible.”
Liz Millings

A Crosby based book club recently read the harrowing true story of a child soldier in Sierra Leone.
A LONG WAY GONE by Ishmael Beah is a very brutal and honest tale of a boy whose ordinary life ended when he was only twelve. He was out playing with friends when the rebels killed his family. Through desperation and starvation , he was manipulated and brainwashed to be a child soldier. Fortunately the United Nations started a programme where they bargained for the children. Ishmael was rehabilitated and started a new life in America. The book was chosen by Yvonne Daley, who is also the secretary of the Waterloo Partnership, which is a local charity helping the survivors of the brutal civil war in Sierra Leone.
The book club recommends this book to everyone.
